Over the Years
Over the years, I’ve noticed a lot of really interesting hairstyles. Really. Everything from half-shaved, half-three feet long to spikes implanted into someone’s bald head to a leopard-printed Afro; and that’s just some of the more out-there stuff. And then there are fashion trends; so many follow them like it’d be the end of the world if they didn’t, while others stick to anti-trends, creating their own trends; others, still, like me, generally stick to what they believe works for them despite the trends and fashions. I’ve been wondering, however, on this topic, if we’ve gone too far in trying to be individuals that fit into society.
To be individuals and to be part of society are two parts of a whole, and yet, so many people see only one side or the other of it at any given time. It’s a paradox; we cannot be ourselves without others, and we cannot be part of society in a healthy manner without being ourselves. It’s part of the paradox of living. We yearn to fit in yet to be different. We yearn to be individuals, to some degree at least, and yet, many are afraid that if they are truly themselves they won’t fit in and so they go with the crowd rather than with their intuition and sense of self.
Which brings about part of what I wonder. I wonder how much one can be in each without going over some invisible, intuitive line. How far; how much individualism, or how much society-crave-and-fit can one really live with within themselves before they start to get a little overly paranoid.
Over the years, I’ve wondered…
